Always enjoy Dr. Minnelli's presentations. I would suggest a query to industry about the use of Cobol. It should be noted Cobol runs on the mainframe, and the mainframe is the absolutely safest platform in the world. This is a snip from a Cobol search in Bind. ----------------------------------------------------- COBOL is still widely used today in critical sectors such as banking, finance, healthcare, and government, powering essential systems and transaction processing. Key Industries Utilizing COBOL Banking and Financial Services: COBOL is integral to the banking sector, handling 95% of ATM transactions and 80% of in-person banking activities. It supports core banking systems that process billions of transactions daily, making it a backbone for financial institutions. Major banks continue to rely on COBOL for their transaction processing systems due to its reliability and efficiency in managing large volumes of data. Insurance: The insurance industry also heavily utilizes COBOL for policy management, claims processing, and other critical operations. Many legacy systems in insurance companies are built on COBOL, which has proven to be stable and effective over decades. Government: Various government agencies use COBOL for administrative systems, payroll processing, and public service applications. Its ability to handle large-scale data processing makes it suitable for government operations that require high reliability. Healthcare: COBOL is used in healthcare systems for managing patient records, billing, and insurance claims. Its robustness ensures that sensitive data is processed accurately and securely. Retail and Other Sectors: While less common, some retail systems and other administrative applications still utilize COBOL, particularly for transaction processing and inventory management. Reasons for Continued Use Legacy Systems: Many organizations have extensive COBOL codebases that are deeply integrated into their operations. The cost and risk associated with replacing these systems with modern languages are often prohibitive, leading to continued reliance on COBOL. Reliability and Performance: COBOL is known for its stability and efficiency, particularly in high-volume transaction environments. It has a proven track record of low defect rates, making it a trusted choice for mission-critical applications. Scalability: COBOL's design allows it to handle large amounts of data and process transactions efficiently, which is essential for industries like finance and healthcare. In summary, COBOL remains a vital programming language in today's technology landscape, particularly in sectors that require reliable and efficient data processing capabilities. Its legacy continues to shape the operations of many large organizations, despite the challenges of modernization and a shrinking pool of COBOL programmers.

Dr Minniti presented a good overview of managing risk associated with vendor selection, and management process.

Instructor knows what he's talking about. Although it seems odd that he often mentions scenarios about replacing a vendor. It will happen, though a better approach to risk management is regular check-ins to assure all expectations continue to be met. He mentions this, too, but just once.
