This course was a good overview of sec 736a and sec 736b rules related to partnership redemptions of partner interest. The presenter provided detail about the various types of payments, how they are taxed by the partnership and partner, and some planning ideas.
PV
Under IRC § 736, payments to a retiring partner are classified as ordinary income (§736(a)) for compensation-related amounts or capital gain (§736(b)) for property interests. The tax treatment depends on whether the payment is tied to partnership income (ordinary) or a capital interest (gain).
