From 2026, the "Big Bill" changes shift many individual tax benefits from deductions/credits into structured limits and matching programs, making planning around eligibility thresholds more important. Key strategies focus on maximizing retirement contributions, timing income, and aligning expenses to optimize refundable credits and avoid phaseouts.

My experience with the OBBBA training and questions above is that most of them focus on remembering a few important changes and the exact numbers. The QBI deduction is made permanent and remains at 20%, with an expanded phase-in range. The Child Tax Credit is also made permanent, with the maximum credit increased to $2,200 and adjusted for inflation after 2025. For business information reporting, the threshold increases from $600 to $2,000 beginning in 2026. The moving expense deduction generally remains suspended, but exceptions apply to active-duty members of the Armed Forces and certain Intelligence Community employees or appointees. The bicycle commuting exclusion is not available after 2025, and wagering losses are limited to 90% of losses rather than 100%. These questions are mostly testing whether you know the specific OBBBA changes, dollar amounts, effective years, and exceptions, so paying close attention to words such as "permanent," "beginning in 2026," "generally," and "exception" is very important.

Cannabis businesses remain heavily impacted by IRC §280E, which generally disallows deductions for ordinary business expenses, making accurate COGS calculations and inventory capitalization critical for tax compliance.
